I'm playing a different game.
Every day, I anticipate the Wordle hint on Thomas Knapp's blog. Not so much to play Wordle as intended, but to see if I can guess the word in one try based on his hint- and maybe by using the first letter. I usually can.
Getting hints and the first letter isn't technically playing Wordle, but it is the game I'm playing. For me, it's more fun than the game they designed.
I've realized that I do this in a lot of other areas as well. That doesn't always work out well, but it's what I tend to do. Especially when I find the "game" uninspiring, dumb, or rigged against me.
The "game" as established isn't for me, so I play it my own way. Other people can play it however they want.

I’m a very poor Wordle player and seldom actually play, but I can usually guess the word from Tom’s clue. I imagine he’d be good at a game like Taboo where you try to get your partner to say a target word without using any of the forbidden words to describe it.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten about Taboo! That's a game I could always win, unless I let someone else win so they'd keep playing. The problem was, they knew when I let them win, so it wasn't fun for them. (I swear I wasn't a bad winner!)
DeleteI would have been happy to play a different game with the Taboo set; try to guess the words without keeping score, so there wasn't a "winner", but no one else wanted to play that way. So, like Trivial Pursuit before it (another game I almost couldn't lose), Taboo stopped getting played.
Oh, and I am willing to play games that I never win, too. Like a sports-based edition of Trivial Pursuit. Most of the questions don't even make sense to me, but I'll do my best. My brother-in-law crushes the competition in any sports knowledge game. Every time. He's also amazed when I get a right answer on those. It would be nice to find a game where the results could be more balanced.
I don't really enjoy games that are entirely based on luck, but at least others will keep playing those with me, since luck doesn't usually smile on me.
I've discovered I'm not that naturally competitive, and other people are and they can get way too worked up over the outcome (poutcome?) of a game. I'm just there for the distraction.
Glad people have fun with the daily hint. I don't think I've ever QUITE found the correct balance between "they'll get this one without even having to think" and "just clever enough that it takes a second or three to figure out."
DeleteTaboo sounds interesting, I may have to buy a set the next time I see one at a thrift store. I used to really love Trivial Pursuit but haven't played it in years. On the rare occasion I end up at a trivia night, I usually seem to do OK.
