Do what you love... but...

"Do what you love; the money will follow."

I doubt that. It would be nice, but I think it is one of those sayings that mislead people.

Not that there aren't other rewards for doing what you love. And perhaps those are worth more than money. It would just be nice to be able to trade some of those "other rewards" for food, rent, gasoline, etc.

It might also be a good thing if you could tailor your "loves" toward things that can also bring in money. If that is possible for you.

Just something to think about, for what it's worth.

  1. Well, it's not always true (helps if the thing you love is valued by others), but it is often true. People do what they love, get good at it, and soon notice others are willing to pay for it. I've seen it many times.

Of course it also won't work if you never get good at what you are doing.

  2. I guess it depends on what you mean by "and the money will follow". If you mean you'll get rich doing what you love doing is kinda unlikely unless you "love" and are able to be an internet genius, pro athlete, or hollywood movie star.

My bro made way more money fixing diesel motors for the USAF (as a contractor) than he does now doing gunsmithing and flat work and some other miscellaneous projects as an independent businessman. But he likes it more. He made a great living ($100k +) but the hours were long and he missed being with his family. Makes about 40 percent less income now but he only works 30 hours a week and sleeps in his own house every night.
