If I were rich...

What would I do if  I woke up tomorrow and discovered I had become rich? I've probably given this more thought than the "possibility" warrants.

But here's what I would do:

Pay off my medical bills.

Schedule my cataract surgery.

Buy my parents' house, put all the bills in my name, and let them stay there for the rest of their lives.

Have all the porch cats taken to the vet to be treated and spayed/neutered, then either placed in homes or released back where they live now (depending on their willingness to tolerate indoor life). Or, maybe build a sheltered facility where the more feral ones can live in safety without too much human interference.

Make donations to cat rescue groups and encourage, with bonus donations, some group to cover this area.

Send a couple of cases of premium ammo to a friend who just bought his first gun.

I have a short list of liberty advocates I would fund, and a few friends I would help.

Pay off my house.

Get a Cybertruck with the solar panel option.

Half-joking- I would never wear a pair of socks twice. I'd buy new socks, wear them once, then donate them to a homeless assistance group to wash and distribute as they see fit.

Sure, I would probably want to move into a better off-grid house, on acreage, which means I would need lots more ammo. I might (OK, would) buy more guns. But those things would have to wait until I take care of the things on the list.

What would you do?

Here are some of the best ways to help me

  1. We occasionally pay the tax on people who aren't good at math and buy a Powerball ticket. We consider it an entertainment expense -- we get to sit around talking about what we'll do when we win a billion bucks.

A lot of the list looks similar to yours.

One thing I would probably do is build a decent recording studio, take some production classes, and start inviting local bands I notice and like to record free of charge. And to use my guitar collection, which would become much larger.

In addition to some kind of Tesla (maybe the Cybertruck, maybe something else) and a boss motorcycle, I would track down a 1974 Oldsmobile Delta 88 (with the 455 engine and four-barrel carb) and have it fully restored, including the 8-track tape player. That was my second car. Best car ever.

  2. Like Mr. Knapp, I sometimes fantasize about various lottery wins. I can see donating most of my winnings to liberty and spiritual groups that I favor. I would take care of my children and grand-children and so-far, one great grandchild.

I could not do a full electric vehicle. The battery technology is just not there. But I would find an older crew cab to do the Edison conversion on.

An older 4x4 in decent body shape, with a blown drive-train should be less than $5000. then $40,000-$50,000 for the conversion and good to go. Plus highly customizable.
Good luck to all of you!!

I agree. But I expect it will GET there long before I win the big jackpot ;-)

I'll be looking into that Edison conversion idea, too.

If I'm rich, I'll be able to have as many vehicles, of all the kinds I want. I would probably keep an electric, with its own solar-powered home charging array, around for local driving of any kind that doesn't require lots of passenger/cargo space (and the Cybertruck might fill the cargo space requirement). A motorcycle, because I'm getting into that and enjoying it. An old 1970s big-engine gas-guzzler because I'm nostalgic. And something -- maybe an SUV, maybe an RV -- for traveling. Probably an RV for extended time trips and just rent what I want (I'm rich, remember?) for shorter visits far from home.

I expect that if I get rich, there will definitely be contributions to people and causes I like. Kent might find a Cybertruck in his yard with the title in the glove box :D

    2. I'm fully aware of the limitations of a fully-electric vehicle, having experienced the shortcomings of a 1970s-era electric car as my first car. I'd like to see how vastly they've improved, and where they still need to improve. Charging time and range being the most obvious areas that need improvement. But, for 95% of my life, the range would be more than enough for me, and I'd probably rarely have to plug it in if it had the Cybertruck with solar panels. My second choice EV would be an Aptera https://aptera.us/

I'd also go for the Edison kit. It would probably be perfect in my 1987 F150. Of course, I'd still need to fix the brake fluid leak and replace the shocks (the two repairs it's in dire need of right now).

Anyway, it can be fun to fantasize.
