The Fifth of November... again

I'll be watching V For Vendetta again like I always do on the Fifth of November.

It gives me hope for the future to see a fictional account of people getting fed up with the State and doing something substantive about it. Even if it's a flawed response. At least it's something more useful than v*ting.

Seriously, prepare for unrest. I think it will not happen in any widespread way. It may not even happen in the few spots it's nearly guaranteed for days or weeks- depending on how long it takes the corporate media to declare a "winner".

It never hurts to be ready for something that never happens, but it can be deadly to not prepare for something that does happen. Making a show of not preparing, which some people like to do, isn't being smart.

  1. I too like watching V for Vendetta periodically. But each time I do I see how deeply flawed it is. First the choice of Guy Fawkes as a model for an anarchist is bizarre. He and his pals wanted to re-establish the Roman Church in England, establishing a pro-papist government in place of the Protestant one. To increase control, not to end it.

Then "V" carries out a vendetta against those who tortured him some years earlier; it's a story of vengeance, just as is the government "justice" system. Nothing anarchist or libertarian about that.

He also inflicts a form of torture on his friend Evie... all the time maintaining a gentle demeanor.

I recall the late Carl Watner preferred the theme "V for Voluntary." When government implodes because nobody will work for it, there's no room for revenge. The loss of power, and the shunning of the worst of its former members, will be penalty enough.

    1. Yeah, V is no role model. I especially hate what he does to Evie. Even he admits he's a monster.

I think the choice of the Guy Fawkes persona is simply because he chose to blow up Parliament, ignoring the historical reasons.

I don't watch it for any of that, though, but because I need an outlet sometimes. It is a guilty pleasure to see government goons and pro-government extremists die violently for the evil they do. In real life, I oppose revenge. But in fictional form, it can be a release.
