Some followers of Islam are stupid because they use their religion as an excuse to stone, kidnap, enslave, or behead someone.
And some followers of Christianity are just as stupid because they use their religion as an excuse to support the State.
Support of the State may be the biggest danger in any religion. In fact, in the long run, that's probably more harmful and has caused more brutal deaths altogether than any other thing done in the name of religion.
Absent the brute force of The State, few religions would have much power to maim and kill and get away with it anymore.
And without being propped up by religious people who believe they are doing the right thing, States would have more trouble pretending to have legitimacy.
It's quite a handy incestuous relationship.

I have been thinking along these lines myself lately. Ever since I heard about the Nigerian Islamist kidnappings and then the forced 'conversion' of their victims, I have been waiting to hear some Islamist authority figure condemn this reprehensible perversity as being contrary to the true teachings of their belief system. Weeks later, I am still waiting. As someone whose ancestors were probably preferentially pagan until the local lord who claimed their ownership decided to become a christian to serve his political ambitions and coerced his 'chattel' into doing the same; this sordid connection between State and religion has been an evil that true civilization can no longer afford to tolerate. Regrettably, rather than disgust the people who witness its wickedness on a daily basis, this seems to neither prove the tangible impotence of 'faith' to make it's supposed adherents better people nor to diminish their loyalty to the evil of State power. The more I see the more the normal herd are revealed as bestial non-sapient's.
