I've heard people say that without government, society is doomed to be violent. Disputes have to be settled in the middle of the night by armed gangs.
That government, on the other hand, brings its courts and such, which means it isn't as violent.
Ok...
I think they've gotten the levels of violence backward, and even worse, they are mistaking violence for aggression. And archation.
Anarchy isn't more violent than government. With government, Statists simply refuse to see the violence that is all around them, like the water surrounding a fish.
Whereas in a free society any violence is generally going to be occasional, for a specific purpose to a particular end, with government the violence is continual-- it never stops. People are robbed ("taxed") without relief. They are ruled by legislation which violates their life, liberty, and property in hundreds (or thousands) of ways, day and night. They live under the constant threat of being attacked by armed agents of the state-- more and more frequently, by armed gangs of state employees in the middle of the night. Anyone who believes this is better (as opposed to just being their preference) is delusional.

Shouldn't there be at least some peace / trade in the government pie? Despite their best efforts, they never manage to completely crush all peace and freedom...
ReplyDeleteThat peace and trade happen outside the government sphere in places where government exists. You're right, they can never completely crush all peace and freedom, but it exists in spite of them, not because of them.
DeleteOften the terms "order" and "peace" are erroneously used as if they are interchangeable, when referencing government influenced results. Imposed order, on the surface can seem like peace, but it's an illusion.
ReplyDeleteGovernment can facilitate order, but not peace. Ever. An institution which systemically breaks the peace, due to the only means it uses, coercion, can NEVER bring peace. It's a logical impossibility, since the acts of coercion / compulsory are baked into all government actions.
Too much order is as deadly as too much chaos. That's why I advocate the balance (anarchy).

yet another demonstration that (a) govt is violence, and (b) it's wrol out there.
Is this in reference to a specific incident?
DeleteAnd, as we all should know by now, "rule of law" is a myth.
Ah. I've seen the news now about the cop-murdered hostage UPS driver. And then I saw that UPS thanked the legislation enforcement thugs who murdered him-- thanking those vermin is like a verbal tic these days.

somebody once complained:
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
