From
End the War on Freedom I found this article:
Arm Yourself by Charley Reese. I particularly like this part: "Of course, if you are as fit as Chuck Norris and have the martial-arts skills of Jet Li, then maybe you can survive without a pistol, although bringing a black belt to a gunfight is not going to do you much good."
Kent,
ReplyDeleteI disagree. It all depends on the range of the confrontation. The better prepared person tends to win the engagement at close range. As a martial artist and self defense instructor if the range is 10' or less the empty handed, or knife wielding opponent can have the upper hand. Firearms take less training and physical prowess, but take more fine motor control. Empty hand and melee weapon techniques take less fine motor skill and more gross motor. When adrenaline hits your system the gross motor abilities are enhanced and your fine motor skills are degraded. Yes, this can be mitigated with training.
This is not to say that every attack at that range will succeed, in fact if you end up in a CQB type confrontation expect to be stabbed or shot if weapons are involved. People just need to remember that guns are not magic wands. Stay aware and use whatever tools are available.
A gun will not automatically make you win every fight, but I do think it is irresponsible to not make sure you have the option available if it is needed. It is like saying that penicillin can't cure every infection, so don't bother keeping it in the pharmacy.
